Now that the holidays are behind us and we’re into the New Year, it’s time for us — the Reflector and its readers — to get busy selecting our 2008 Citizen of the Year.
Over the next two months, our news and advertising staffs will be busy working on our annual “Insight” editions, which will be published on each Monday in February.
We inaugurated the Citizen of the Year with 2007’s Insight, receiving many great nominations. An internal committee selected Scott Ford. We gave him a plaque and made a donation to the Salvation Army in his name. We will do the same this year, though the charity is the choice of the winner.
So over the next few weeks, be thinking about who would be a worthy recipient of this award. Ideally, it’s someone who is not in the news regularly; someone who works hard behind the scenes to make Norwalk and/or Huron County a better place to live.
The theme of the Insight edition this year is “Anniversaries.” There will be many observed around this time — Fisher-Titus’ 50th; the Chamber’s 100th; the Firelands’ 200th, are all within about a year of each other. A good bit of our coverage will focus on these events and our staff will be looking for others.
If you know of any notable anniversaries of churches, businesses, organizations or even married couples, that are coming up, please contact Managing Editor Joe Centers at email@example.com, or call him at 419-668-3771, ext. 234. Also direct Citizen of the Year nominations to Centers.
Insight is the biggest project we undertake at the Reflector each year and it takes the entire staff and the community working together to pull it off successfully.
For our staff, they have to produce the daily newspaper — a full-time job in itself — and then work harder, smarter and longer for a couple months to produce the Insight sections. But despite our efforts, we can’t do it without the community’s help in the form of story ideas, story cooperation and purchasing advertising, which, of course, pays for publication of the section.
We are looking forward in 2008 to producing the best Insight edition we’ve ever produced and we hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we do producing it.
