Toast Casa Fiesta for voluntarily throwing out its entire inventory of food after the Norwalk restaurant was linked to a salmonella scare. As owner Ramon Ornelas said, "It is 100 times better to lose inventory than to have customers get sick." Before Casa Fiesta re-opened Friday, Ornelas said, workers disinfected every inch of the restaurant just in time for today's Cinco De Mayo celebration.
Roast the lack of security at the Shady Lane Drive storage area where law enforcement officials were keeping about 160 pounds of marijuana seized in a traffic stop. We realize hindsight is 20-20, but after jurors and others including one of the defendants were taken to the barn to see the marijuana as part of the trial proceedings, one would think it might be a good idea to have a guard there 24/7. But instead, thieves broke in and made off with more than 100 pounds of the stuff. Prosecutor Russell Leffler estimated one of the stolen container's street value is between $100,000 and $120,000. Cheech and Chong would be set for life.
Toast Norwalk Furniture for shifting jobs from North Carolina, Tennessee and Mississippi to Norwalk a nice reversal. Usually we lose jobs to the South. Let's hope the company and its workers here play nice during the next contract negotiations and maintain the economic benefits of the city's largest manufacturer.
Roast New London resident Donna Dennis, the 41-year-old convicted of animal cruelty. Investigators discovered a ghastly scene with a slew of dead and neglected animals when they raided her home earlier this year. We praise Judge John Ridge for handing out a 60-day jail sentence and banning Dennis from owning pets for the next five years.
Toast the Green Team and the many other people who helped Norwalk have a successful Green Week with hundreds of people participating in the various activities and more than a thousand trees handed out recently to be planted in the area. We commend Norwalk Mayor Sue Lesch and other city officials for their commitment in continuing efforts to make people more aware of ways to protect the environment.
