MONROEVILLE - When Amelia Ott didn’t win at last year’s Monroeville Dam Festival Royalty Pageant, she decided to give it another try.

Not only that, Ott tried to talk her brother into running with her.

Eli Ott agreed.

“I told my mom that I would win,” Amelia said.

She was right.

Her brother won, too.

Eli and Amelia, 6 and 7, were crowned as junior prince and junior princess, respectively, of the 2009 Monroeville Dam Festival.

The theme for this year’s court could be “At Least Three in the Family.” In addition to Amelia and Eli, 8-year-old Sami Ott was crowned princess. Sami Ott said she’s not sure how she’s related to the other two, but could be a distant relative.

“It means a lot to me,” Sami said. “I just never win anything in my life.”

Amelia and Eli’s mother, Mimi, said she’s glad both her children were crowned together. The pair are very close to begin with, she said.

“I get to do it with my sister,” Eli said.

Said Amelia: It’s going to be fun.”

The Ott siblings and their cousin will be joined by 17-year-old Amanda Stang, who was crowned queen.

Stang and Eli Ott were the lone candidates in their category, while Amelia Ott faced competition from multiple candidates.

Stang said it feels “awesome” to be crowned queen.

“It’s a good thing to do just to get good publicity for the town,” she said.

Stang said she took the fact she had no competition in stride.

“It is what it is,” she said.

Stang said as queen, she will publicize the royalty contest at Monroeville High School, where she is a senior. She said she also wants to see festival attendance increase.

Today’s activities include a Beautiful Baby Contest at 10 a.m., a 3-Point shoot-out at 11 a.m., a corn hole tournament at 2 p.m. and the parade line-up at 3 p.m. The parade begins at 3:30 p.m.

A full schedule of events was published on page B-3 of Thursday’s edition of the Reflector.

The festival runs through 5 p.m. Sunday at Marsh Field.
