Norwalk police looking to distribute bikes

Norwalk police have collected about a hundred abandoned bikes and are now looking for agencies organizations to help them distribute the bikes.

"Basically, now we just want to get them to people who need them," Chief Kevin Cashen said. "They're usually found bikes or stolen bikes that nobody has claimed."

He said the city has collected bikes of all sizes and types, "from very good condition to poor condition," adding that many of bikes need some repair work.

Cashen said the United Fund and the Salvation Army have helped distribute the bikes in the past, but any public agency or non-profit organization could help the police department get the bikes to people who need them.

"We could auction them off, but we prefer to use the city ordinance to give them to people who need them," Cashen said.
