MONROEVILLE A 12-year-old rural Monroeville girl is listed in fair condition at a Toledo hospital after accidentally being shot by her sibling Thursday.
"It was a wound to the neck," Huron County Sheriff's Major Greg Englund said. "It was the 13-year-old brother who picked up the gun, accidentally discharging (it) and hitting her in the neck."
Englund said the boy used a 22-caliber rifle in the incident. Additional information was unavailable and the girl's mother declined to comment Friday.
A Fisher-Titus Medical Center emergency room employee reported treating the Everingin Road girl about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dispatcher Cindy Withrow wrote in her report. Sgt. Greg Gadberry, one of the investigators in the case, was advised to contact the Monroeville Police Department to notify the mother, who works in the village.
A medical helicopter later flew the girl to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. The incident remains under investigation.
