NEW LONDON - In a special session Wednesday, the New London board of education appointed Middle School Principal Dennis Gable interim high school principal to replace Mary Lou Harris, who resigned effective March 31.
Gable will serve in both positions for 60 days and will be assisted by Geoff Geist, who will temporarily leave his teaching post to become dean of students for 50 days.
As dean of students he will be responsible for discipline and assisting Gable with other duties. Both Gable and Geist will resume their regular duties for the next school year.
Superintendent Jim Eibel told the board the decision has been made to transition from a mod to a period schedule for the fall. Currently the school day is broken into 20, 20-minute mods, but that will now become seven 50-minute periods, plus a half-hour lunch.
Eibel said the teachers support the change, and Gable said although it will be an adjustment, "It's very feasible," because it makes better use of teachers and focuses more on academics and core curriculum.
Because scheduling is an administrative function, no board action was needed on the issue.
The board accepted the resignation of Harris, high school science teacher Joe Sexton, high school math teacher Rob Gregory and reading teacher Kathy Brouse, all of whom are retiring. Harris has served the district for 22 years, Sexton and Gregory for 35 and Brouse for 23.
The board went into executive session to discuss the superintendent search with representatives from the Telego Center. They said 20 applications were submitted for the position.
