Every once and a while I try to update readers on what's new in recycling and the trash world. We have been using trash numbers from the early part of 2001. That estimate was that each person in the USA generated about one ton (2,000 pounds) of trash per year.
We now have new figures from 2005. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency each person generated 1,643 pounds of garbage. The new numbers are very encouraging, because it shows 32 percent of our trash was pulled out to be recycled. That is twice the amount (15 percent) that was recycled 15 years ago!
