NEW LONDON A Wakeman man was killed Friday afternoon after his pickup truck went off the road and struck a tree.

Michael T. Cooksey, 28, of 2658 Chenango Road, was northbound on the road of his residence about a mile north of Fayette Road in New London Township when he lost control of his 2006 Chevy 2500 HD pickup truck at 5:08 p.m., troopers with the Norwalk post of the state Highway Patrol said.

Cooksey's vehicle, which contained him and his 7-year-old daughter, Calista, then went off the left side of the roadway and struck a tree, troopers said.

Cooksey, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene by New London EMS personnel.

His daughter was secured in a child booster seat with a seat belt when the accident occurred, troopers said. The collision caused Calista to be trapped in the truck, but New London firefighters were able to free her.

She was flown by helicopter to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo, where she was listed in serious condition with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries Friday night.

"There were no witnesses to the crash and the exact cause remains under investigation," Lt. Jim Bryan, Norwalk post commander, stated in a news release Friday night.

No other information was available at press time.
