Reflector editorial discussing smoking ban is way off base

Regardless of their feelings about the SmokeFree Workplace Act, readers should be aware that the Reflector’s most recent editorial on the subject (”Our View: A sensible smoking solution,” April 19) was loaded with misinformation and opinion-as-fact.
Specifically, the claim that “most bar and restaurant patrons do not even belong to a private club” is both glib and beside the point. The implication that private clubs (organizations offering food, beverages, and often live entertainment) do not directly compete with public bars and restaurants (businesses offering food, beverages, and often live entertainment) is a frankly ridiculous conclusion with no basis in reality.
Like the law or dislike it, fight for it or against it, as your conscience dictates. But don’t think that “bar and restaurant owners are simply griping over sour grapes,” as the Reflector editorial staff would have you believe.
