Congratulations on the thoughtful column by publisher Andy Prutsok titled "Are Americans popping too many pills?" (May 2). He left out one example of pills and violence and that is Columbine.
We don't like to be critical of the pharmaceutical companies because they have done so much good, but it's important to take a very close look at the problems they have created.
One of the problems has been the mass marketing of prescription drugs. It has created a culture in which we have come to believe: "Have a problem? Take a pill." But sometimes it takes more than a pill to solve a problem.
In the case of Seung-Hui Cho, we wonder why his family did not do anything to control him. Ultimately, it was their responsibility and they failed to do it. Perhaps that was too much trouble, so they gave their son a pill.
