Walking and running around Norwalk are both great ways to fulfill the Norwalk 90 challenge, but it is important to remember safety as you are traveling through the city.
Here are some tips to follow to make your exercise activities safer.
Carry water if it is extremely hot and you are going on a long walk.
A cell phone also is helpful if a problem develops, such as a charging dog or medical emergency.
Remember: Jaywalking in the business district is illegal. Always use the crosswalks when crossing the street. When crossing intersections with a traffic signal, cross with the direction of vehicle travel and not against it.
Use common sense when walking. Do not walk or run in front of a moving vehicle.
Be aware of your surroundings. Make sure vehicles are completely stopped at stop signs or traffic lights before you cross at a crosswalk.
If available, use a sidewalk. Where a sidewalk is not provided, pedestrians should walk along the highway's shoulder or outside edge of the roadway. If you are on a two-way road, you should walk only on the left side of the roadway (facing traffic).
Use care when crossing a bridge or railroad crossing. Do not pass through, around, over or under any crossing gate or barrier at a railroad crossing or bridge while the gate or barrier is closed or is being opened or closed.
