Maybe long presidential campaign isn't so bad

I was a fan of Arizona Sen. John McCain in 2000. He was a maverick and often quite funny. A guy whose every utterance was not scripted or focus grouped and, much of the time it seemed, barely even rational. I liked that guy. Wonder where he is?

The John McCain we're seeing these days is stiff, humorless and seems to mostly walk on eggshells, deathly afraid of saying something that might offend the James Dobson's of the world and, not uncoincidentally, is seeing his poll numbers plummet to the point that he finished fifth, behind Sam Brownback, in a straw poll conducted at the recent Conservative Political Action Committee convention. Had John Kerry been on that ballot, he probably would have finished sixth.
