PERRY TOWNSHIP - Robert M. Leber, 79, of Monroeville, died early this morning after suffering two heart attacks following a car accident about 11 p.m. Monday night in Morrow County.
He is the father of Norwalk Parks and Recreation Director Ken Leber.
"It's a loss to the community," said Dick Winslow. "We spent many years on the Monroeville school board together. He's very popular in the Monroeville community. He's been active in the schools all his life."
Monroeville Village Clerk/Treasurer Bonnie Beck, who went to school with Leber's children, said she is in shock.
Beck described Leber as a kind, caring person who supported his grandchildren in their school sports contests.
"I'm still trying to absorb it," she said. "It's devastating to us. You can't find a nicer man than Bob Leber."
Leber's son, Frederick A. Leber, 44, was driving north on Ohio 314 when he lost control on the wet highway. Leber's pickup truck crossed the center line and was hit on the passenger side by another pickup traveling south. Gary D. Weiland, 48, of Fredericktown, was driving the other truck.
All three men were transported to Morrow County Hospital. Robert Leber suffered a heart attack at the hospital and was transferred to Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus.
Leber had another heart attack while at Riverside and was pronounced dead at 4:55 a.m.
Frederick Leber was released from Morrow County Hospital after receiving treatment.
The state Highway Patrol is investigating the accident.
