Travis Cring, 9, earned a scholarship for his 500-word essay on "Why I Want To Be a Beekeeper."

The contest, organized by the Lorain County Beekeepers Association, was open to youngsters ages 9 to 18.

As a result of the scholarship, Travis attended five educational beekeepers classes for free and received a wooden beehive with frames, foundation, queen and worker bees, helmet, veil, smoker, hive tool and entrance feeder.

As part of the arrangement, the local beekeepers group requires Travis to complete an educational booth at the Lorain County Fair and enter honey for judging.

He will soon be registered by the state of Ohio as having an official apiary.

Travis, who lives in Monroeville and is currently home-schooled, said he looks forward to caring for the bees and selling honey.
