Local band in PBS film

Mike Gildenmeister thinks his local band, Plank Road, might have a shot at playing at Blossom Music Center someday.

There's a reason for his guarded optimism: The band recently filmed a PBS Music Series, set for airing early next year. The series will appear on and off throughout 2008.

Bowling Green-based WBGU-PBS filmed the series, which viewers mostly west of Norwalk will see, band guitarist/vocalist Scott Stiert said.

He said Plank Road got a 30-minute segment on "Music Brewing Series," which features musicians in northwest and central Ohio.

"We were just fortunate to get a spot on us," Stiert said.

A year ago he contacted Coffee Amici in Findlay, where the series is filmed.

The powers that be at Coffee Amici accepted Plank Road.

The business bills itself as "A Fine Arts Coffeehouse."

"We believe talent in the fine arts is a gift to be shared," reads its Web site,www.coffeeamici.com. "Some are given steady hands to paint and sculpt. Another may have a clear voice for song. Instrumentalists have the passion to practice endlessly."

Plank Road has been at it almost five years.

Stiert and Dave Heltzel were looking to start a band.

They were introduced through a mutual friend, but could have easily met each other on their own: Stiert graduated from Edison High School in 1982, and Heltzel a year before, although they didn't know each other.
