A portion of Norwalk was without power for more than two hours Wednesday evening after a power line went down on Ontario Street.

Norwalk fire and police personnel responded to the area near 20 Ontario St. at 9:13 p.m. Wednesday.

Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a power line down on the ground arcing. Firefighters secured the scene until Ohio Edison crews arrived.

The power was restored about 11:45 p.m.

Residents on the city's east side gathered outside their darkened houses as the evening twilight offered some light for the first hour of the outage.

Norwalk Police Chief Kevin Cashen was at the scene.

"We believe it was a natural event," Cashen said this morning. "Not anything purposely caused by somebody.

"Ohio Edison had two crews respond as quickly as possible," Cashen added. "The power was out well over two hours."

An Ohio Edison spokesperson reported 1,876 customers were without power.
