Ohio residents have an Oct. 1 deadline for filing for the new Homestead Exemption. This gives Ohio senior citizens and the disabled some relief in taxes on the property or manufactured home.
Eligible homeowners may apply for the exemption at their local county auditor's office. In Huron County, residents may obtain a form from the office of Roland Tkach, Huron County Auditor at 12 E. Main St., Suite 300, Norwalk, from their local library, from the state's Web site which is tax.ohio.org or by calling the auditor's office at (419) 668-8464 and one will be mailed to them.
An Ohio homeowner who is 65 years of age or totally and permanently disabled, lives in their home as their primary residence may qualify. Any homeowner who is currently receiving the Homestead Exemption does not need to re-apply.
The new Homestead Exemption will begin with tax year 2007 for real property tax and 2008 for manufactured homes or mobile homes, both of which are paid in 2008.
A copy of your driver's license should accompany your application and if the property is in a trust, a copy of the ownership page showing the type of trust should also be included.
