TWINSBURG - The St. Paul High School volleyball team is preparing to make its fourth straight trip and fifth in the last six years to the state Final Four in the Nutter Center at Wright State University.

The Lady Flyers captured their fourth straight Div. IV regional crown Saturday afternoon with a 17-25, 25-10, 25-15, 25-21 win over Kidron Central Christian at Twinsburg High School.

The Lady Flyers (25-2) will take on Jackson Center (25-3) in the fifth match Friday (about 5 p.m.) in the state semifinals, while Marion Local (26-1) meets Newark Catholic (21-7) in the second semifinal. Action begins at 11 a.m. Friday and St. Paul is the fifth match of the day.

Marion Local was ranked No. 1 in the final state coaches poll, Jackson Center was No. 2, St. Paul No. 3 and Newark Catholic tied for No. 19.

Starting time Saturday for the state title match is posted for 5 p.m. It's the fourth match of the day with action beginning at 11 a.m. St. Paul's match time is approximate, but will not start before 5.

The St. Paul football team takes on Warren John F. Kennedy in the regional semifinals Saturday at Medina High School. The start time of the football game either 1 or 7 p.m. was to be determined this afternoon.

Either way, a decision will have to be made if the Lady Flyers advance to the finals. Along with all of the fans, there are six families with ties to both teams.

Deb and Pat Welfle have a daughter (Amber) on the volleyball team and a son (Alex) on the football team; Bill and Bonnie Stein have a daughter (Megan) and son (Wes) playing; Bob and Jackie Bundschuh have twins Kaylee and Kyle playing; Sandy and the late Ron Leto have a daughter (Danielle) and son (Derek) playing; Dustan Badovick has a daughter (Emma) playing and he is a volunteer assistant football coach; and Natalie and John Livengood have a daughter (Hannah) playing volleyball while John, of course, is the head football coach.

There also are band members with ties to both teams.

Tickets for volleyball will be on sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the athletic office. Cost is $7 presale and $9 at the door. One ticket is good for the entire day.

The Lady Flyers made their first trip to Dayton in 2002 and took home the state title with a 9-15, 15-13, 15-13 win over Marion Local. They returned in 2004 and advanced to the finals where they lost to St. Henry. In 2005 the Lady Flyers lost to Newark Catholic in the semifinals, then last season they posted wins over Adena and New Knoxville to make it two titles in five years.

Seniors Andrea Fritz and Christine Dow will be playing in Dayton for the fourth straight year.

"It's amazing," Fritz said after the match. "I don't know how to explain it. This is our biggest goal every year to get to the state tournament. This has been great getting there every year."

The Lady Flyers struggled in their first game against Kidron, but that's when their experience took over.

There are six seniors, seven sophomores and a freshman on this year's tournament roster.

"We definitely knew what we had to do after that first game," Dow said.
