Someone asked me once "What's your favorite kind of hunting?" and I had to reply, "A type I've not done in a long time." Which is true. I've hunted mule deer, pheasants and prairie chickens in South Dakota, whitetails in five or six states, squirrels and rabbits in multiple states and more. But my absolute favorite hunting quarry is bobwhite quail, and I haven't done it in years.
Back when I was a kid in southern Ohio, it was routine to go rabbit hunting in rugged hill country and put up several coveys over a morning. It was great fun because they'd hide in grass or fallen leaves and suddenly between one step and the next, small brown birds would explode all around heading in every direction. I was always surprised and often flock shot the covey, missing every one most times, until I learned to pick out a single bird, lead it, and usually make a hit.
