AVERY EHOVE's legal careers program has formed its first Ohio mock trial team. The Ohio Mock Trial program is an academic competition designed to foster a better understanding of the American democratic legal system and to encourage development of analytical and communication skills. In moving from the classroom to the courtroom, high school students add an important dimension to their learning experience in citizenship education.

Students have volunteered to meet every Saturday morning to prepare and practice for the district competition in February. They plan a special session for parents prior to the contest.

Half the team will compete as the plaintiff representing the fictitious "People's Church" while the other half will represent the fictitious "City of Urbanopolis." The case is a First Amendment scenario in which the Church is allowing homeless people to sleep on its property. The City of Urbanopolis claims the homeless are creating a nuisance and have requested injunctive relief from the court to stop the church from using its property for the homeless.
