Demand pledge from candidates

"If I receive my party's nomination for President of the United States, I pledge to participate in nine, 90-minute dialogues in the nine weeks before the general election with my opponent. In the Lincoln-Douglas style, I will agree to debate my opponent with only a time-keeper, and to insist upon no rules. I understand it will be just me and my solutions and my opponent with theirs."

This is a challenge by Newt Gingrich to any candidate for president in 2008. He has yet to declare his candidacy, but has proposed this for the candidates. It would eliminate the liberal media control of any debates and leave the candidates on their own to answer each others' questions and provide solutions to the country's problems from their core beliefs. It would require each candidate to be completely prepared in his own mind, not based on questions to be asked by a reporter. They must be able to substantiate their positions on issues with historical parallels. If it didn't work in the past, it probably won't work now. Americans deserve to know exactly where each candidate stands on the issues. Let's pressure all candidates to have this type of debate to get their stand on all of the issues that are important to us.

Regardless of who the candidates are, we need this unfiltered information to cast an informed vote.
