Norwalk City Council will consider a one-year ban on the installation of any more exterior furnaces at tonight’s meeting to give council time to research possible regulations or a permanent ban.
The moratorium does not affect any exterior furnacess already installed and in operation.
Council members have discussed the need for some type of regulation over the devices at two work sessions. Residents have come forward on both sides of the issue.
People with exterior furnaces have explained the devices are the most economical way to heat their homes. Other residents have come forward to complain about smoke and the smell of exterior furnaces used by neighbors.
Zoning Officer Linda Hebert said at the last work session that she has received many complaints, but didn’t keep track of the total number. She said about half of the complaints were about an exterior furnace on Henry Street that has been removed.
