Previous Public Service: Current president of Western Reserve Local Board of Education

Why did you decide to run: I am currently president of the WR Board of Education and am seeking my second term. My Father, my husband and I, and our daughter graduated from here. Now, my grandchildren attend Western. It is extremely important to me that we offer our students, and community, the best educational opportunities that we can provide. During the past 3 1/2 years on the board, I have gained valuable experience in balancing educational needs and wants within a limited budget. I feel we need to maintain continuity on the board to follow through with initiatives that have already been set into motion.

What do you see as the top three concerns facing your constituents:

1) Support administrators and staff as they adapt to changes brought about by cuts made last spring. Make adjustments as necessary.

2) Continue to analyze cost saving measures. One area I would explore is to move our pre-School program to an existing location on campus. We could then sell the building/land in Wakeman and rid the district of the continual costs of maintaining that facility.

3) Ensure that academic expectations, and ultimately, scores, continue to rise. The board must insist on high standards in all aspects of the educational process. These goals must trickle down to every level including the students themselves.

James C. Todd of 3621 Butler Road and Mark L. Blair of 2733 Chenango Road are also running for seats on the Western Reserve school board. Neither returned a candidate questionaire sent by the Reflector.
