City employees talk union; ask 26% hike

Norwalk city workers are thinking about joining a labor union, the Reflector has learned.

Forty-five of 80 city workers below the supervisory level attended a meeting with a union representative Thursday night. He is Donald Keaton, a staff representative of the Ohio Civil Service Employees Association.

Several reliable sources confirmed the information but none wanted to be identified. The union is the Ohio Civil Service Employee's Union.

The city and its employees are in the midst of salary negotiations. Keaton was invited to Norwalk by the workers' negotiating team which includes two or three representatives from each city department.

Sheriff puts on 2 more deputies

Huron County Sheriff John Borgia has appointed two new deputies to bolster his undermanned staff.

They are Richard Sutherland, 27, rural Wakeman, and Anthony P. Arcudi, 20, Wakeman.

Heckelman sells shop

Henry Heckelman, who has operated Henry's Flower Shop for 40 years, is retiring tonight.

Bessie Bond, who has worked for Heckelman for 33 years, is also retiring.

The business has been purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Barnett, Willard. They take over the business tonight.

Flyers set school record

Jim Fisher fired a 39 at Elks Country Club Thursday to lead St. Paul to a 170-181 win over Edison.

According to Flyer Coach Roger Holman, the Flyers set a school record. The old record was 172 strokes.

Jerry Didion added 41 and Eric Theisen and Steve Fries, 45 each for the Flyers.

Puente Top Qualifier

Norwalk's John Puente has the best qualifying round so far for the City Golf Tournament at Elks Country Club. He fired a 72 in the championship flight. Mike Battles had a 73 in the same flight.

In the "A" Flight, Bob Fisher and Bill Terry lead with 85s, and Don Hohler's 84 is tops in the "B" Flight. Joe Bibb is top qualifier in the "C" Flight with an 80.
