Due to a recent report of planting intentions, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced it will not offer penalty-free early releases from CRP contracts.
According to the report, U.S. farmers intend to plant 15 percent more corn acres, 90.5 million acres, in 2007. This is an increase of 12 million acres over 2006. USDA also plans not to conduct a general CRP sign-up in 2007 or 2008. However, environmentally sensitive acreage qualifying for the Lake Erie Conservation Reserve Enhancement Programs (CREP) or Continuous CRP will still be eligible for enrollment. These targeted programs are funded and will continue to provide a heightened environmental benefit on select areas.
