350 alumni return

"It was fantastic. It was just wonderful."

Organizer Tom Lane said Sunday's first Norwalk Alumni Association reunion at the high school was a huge success and something that was long overdue.

"St. Paul has a great alumni association and they do something every year," Lane said. "New London has a great association and now we have one. This is something we will do every year. Next year it will be on the same Sunday (Aug. 17)."

Lane said the alumni went from the very old to the very young.

"We went from way down in the early 30s to just past the turn of the century," he said. "I would say the bulk was in the 40s, 50s and 60s, which you would expect. There were tours of the Main Street School. For almost everybody there, that was their high school.

"Myself, personally, I saw at least half-dozen people I haven't seen in 50 or 55 years. There was a lot of joy. It was awesome, at least for me it was."

Lane and Bob Mitchell spearheaded the event, but Lane said many others were involved.

"You can't believe how much (Norwalk superintendent) Wayne Babcanec and (Norwallk High School Principal) Bob Duncan contributed to this. We had access to anything we wanted. The school people were absolutely fantastic."

Mitchell said things couldn't have worked out any better.

"It was a great event and absolutely worth the work," he said. "People were hugging and slapping everybody on the back. It was a great time. We had approximately 350 people there, including two ladies from the class of 1931.

"We had a committee that worked long and hard to put this together. And we welcome people who would like to help us with future reunions."

Babcanec said it was a big day for Norwalk City Schools.

"I think it's a great idea to get the classes together," he said. "It's a chance for them to reacquaint themselves with their classmates and it's a chance for me to show them what we have. It is a win-win situation.

"It's my understanding they are going to meet this week and start planning for next year."
