The Railroad Safety Task Force committee has announced the repair, replacement, and site distance improvements of 19 Huron County railroad crossings in 2006.

In addition, the opening of two overpasses and the implementation of rumble strips were accomplished. Huron County Engineer Joe Kovach worked with Lt. Jim Bryan of the Ohio State Highway Patrol to determine areas of need for rumble strips that were installed on several county roads, at railroad crossings and areas approaching state highway intersections.

Huron County commissioners Mike Adelman and Gary Bauer said they have received many positive comments regarding crossing safety improvements. Major railroad crossing improvements completed this year were Wheeling Lake Erie Railway at Baseline Road, Townline 111, Plymouth East Road, New State Road, Edwards Road and 224. Also at WLE, Ohio 547 North, Sandhill Road and Section Line Road 30. Ashland Railway completed Ohio 598 and U.S. 224 while CSX completed crossings at Baseline Road, Greenwich Milan Townline Road, Lane Road, Kniffin Street, Townsend Street, Peru Center Road and Boughtonville Road.

Next year will see bids go out for the U.S. 250 overpass south of Fitchville. A final meeting should be near as there is environmental clearance. At the end of January there is a meeting to recommend alignment for the Ohio 13 overpass. This project may go out to bid in 2008.
