Supermarket retailer Giant Eagle plans to open its Norwalk store on Thursday.

Opening-day festivities at the 50,000-square-foot supermarket at 80 Whittlesey Ave. include a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m., a charitable check presentation and a giveaway of $10 Giant Eagle gift cards to the supermarket's first 50 customers after 9 a.m.

Through Feb. 14, customers purchasing select Pepsi products are entered to win a two-year lease on a 2007 Dodge Nitro. In addition, through Feb. 28, customers can win free fuel for a year or $1,000 in free groceries with any Giant Eagle Advantage Card purchase.

"We are delighted to become part of the Norwalk community," said Rob Borella, Giant Eagle senior director of marketing and corporate communications. "The supermarket will boast a variety of food offerings, assorted service departments for added customer convenience and helpful and inviting employees. Customers have come to expect these offerings from Giant Eagle, and we're excited to be bringing these amenities to Norwalk."

Amenities Giant Eagle plans to offer include:

A wide selection of the region's fresh fruits and vegetables, including as many as 16 varieties of peppers, 18 types of tomatoes and 17 kinds of mushrooms.

Full-service meat, seafood and bakery departments.

Giant Eagle corporate brand products, including the recently introduced Market District line of distinct high-quality products.

An array of savings opportunities, including low everyday prices on the products customers purchase most frequently, a wide assortment of Giant Eagle brand and Valu Time products, weekly specials, double coupons and Giant Eagle Advantage Card promotions.

A wide selection of nutrition, health and beauty care, and prescription items at the in-store pharmacy and numerous health and wellness screenings for added customer convenience.

Service departments for added customer convenience such as in-store banking and a full-service floral department.

A vast selection of the finest wines and domestic and imported beers in refrigerated coolers.

The Norwalk location also will offer a GetGo fuel station and convenience store on-site, slated to open the same day. The GetGo features six pumps and a convenience store that allows customers to "Get In, Get Out, and Get Going." Hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., seven days a week, making redemption for the popular Giant Eagle fuelperks! customer loyalty program very easy.

With fuelperks!, customers meeting purchase requirements earn a discount on each gallon of gas at GetGo with every $50 spent with the Giant Eagle Advantage Card inside Giant Eagle supermarkets and GetGo locations.

There are no limits on the amount of fuelperks! savings a customer can accumulate. Customer savings can be accumulated up to the price of a free tank of gas (one vehicle only; maximum of 30 gallons) in one transaction, and any fuelperks! savings accumulated above the price per gallon remains on the customer's card for future use.

Giant Eagle purchased the store from Tops Friendly Market in the fall. Tops closed its doors in early December, and Giant Eagle kept the store closed for about two months for renovation and training.
