The holiday season is a busy time of year. It is also a time of giving and Fisher-Titus Medical Center's employees and medical staff demonstrated this spirit to help families in need during the holiday season.
The environmental services 'Elves' and marketing/public relations departments invited all FTMC departments to collect items for a variety of charities in FTMC's fourth annual holiday challenge. Collection dates were Nov. 27 to Dec. 12.
This year, employees participated in the United Fund's "Basket Basics" Project designed to help families and individuals who fall through the cracks. More than 120 bags with a wide variety of items were collected and distributed to the United Fund. Departments were provided with small, medium and large bags and then were asked to fill them with a variety of necessities such as toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, bath and hand soap and other personal care items.
As part of the challenge, a collection box also was set up in the cafeteria for the Norwalk Salvation Army. Almost 500 food items were collected and distributed to provide Christmas dinners through the Salvation Army's Christmas Castle project.
The dietary department also assembled and provided fruit baskets for area community organizations in the FTMC service area. The department donated 1,300 baskets this year to area organizations. In addition, the department sent more than 100 pounds of items to the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion for the Toledo Reserve Center Serving in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Iraq.
FTMC's medical staff also donated $1,500 to area Salvation Armies in Norwalk, Greenwich and New London with the Medical Center matching that amount for a $3,000 total.
Other projects included:
Managers and staff employees selected 20 children, ranging in age from 10 to 16 years, from the Reach Our Youth giving tree at the Huron County Courthouse.
The Human Resources Department adopted an area family and collected a variety of items to make their holiday season brighter.
The Laboratory Department raised $675 for area agencies including Salvation Army, FTMC Oncology Caring and Sharing Cancer Support Group, Humane Society, American Red Cross and Marines Toys for Tots.
