The Milan post of the state Highway Patrol is seeking the public's assistance in locating a truck pulling a trailer involved in a fatal crash Sunday.

The trailer on the westbound pickup truck lost a tire, which bounced over the median wall, hitting the windshield of an eastbound vehicle, Trooper Charles Morsher said. The truck then fled the scene. The incident happened at 11:55 a.m. at milepost 124 on the Ohio Turnpike in Berlin Township.

The driver of the eastbound 2009 Dodge Caliber, Douglas L. Wise, 51, of Grove City, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the impact with the tire. Erie County Coroner Dr. Brian Baxter pronounced him dead at the scene.

North Central EMS transported Wise's passenger and daughter, Stefanie A. Wise, 24, also of Grove City, to Fisher-Titus Medical Center with serious, incapacitating injuries. She was sitting in the right front seat. Fisher-Titus spokeswoman Johnna Young said Wise was treated and later released.

"She had some pretty extensive head injuries," Trooper Phil Ralston said Wednesday. "It was her vehicle (her father) was driving."

The tire hit Wise's vehicle directly in the windshield and entered the interior passenger compartment, Morsher said, causing the crash. The car, which had heavy damage to the front hood, windshield and interior occupant compartment, was removed from the scene by Rich's Towing.

Anyone with information that will assist in the investigation of the crash is encouraged to call the Milan post of the state Highway Patrol at (419) 499-4808.
