In an effort to continue to build relationships between students and the community, this event will raise money for the school’s annual Veterans Day program and allow students to sponsor seats on a future Honor Flight. Willard students have been actively involved with Honor Flight over the past three years in many different aspects, such as being a part of the welcome-home parade and escorting veterans through the airport after their Honor Flight experience.
But the students want to do more.
Honor Flight is a non-profit organization that flies America’s veterans to Washington to visit those memorials dedicated in honor to the service and sacrifices of themselves and their fellow brothers and sisters. This is a time of reflection and paying tribute to those who have served their country and a time for the students to express thanks to these brave men and women for their service is running out.
In addition to Honor Flight, this 5K run/walk will help support the annual Willard City Schools Veterans Day program. The 2018 event hosted more than 175 veterans and their guests for a time of fellowship, breakfast and an honorary program. Every student and staff member in the Willard school district was in attendance to show their appreciation for the service and sacrifice of the men and women in the Willard community who so bravely served.
Each veteran received “Mail Call” bags, which included letters from students and small appreciation gifts from the community.
