Norwalk is a winner's hotspot: Couple get a grand after filing taxes early

Norwalk seems to be a fortunate spot for area winners.

H&R Block’s local office has claimed a third winner for the $1,000 prize, an unusual and exciting achievement for a small city office.

This time, Mark and Ambrosia Loudy, a Norwalk couple with three kids, are taking the big check home.

Nationwide, H&R Block has been encouraging its customers to file early by offering $1,000 to 1,000 people every day through Feb. 19, with the last eligible day to file being Feb. 15, for a total of $38 million given away.

H&R Block is the world’s largest tax services provider, with about 12,000 company-owned and franchise retail locations. Despite the tremendous number of people filing at all of those offices, Norwalk’s location has struck gold for a third time in two weeks. Norwalk’s Steve Fisher was announced as the Norwalk office’s first winner a little over a week ago and Jason Signs was announced as its second winner Saturday.

Mark Loudy said they received the email late last week.

“We were surprised,” both Loudys said.

Mark works at Smith Paving and Excavating. Since construction generally slows down in the winter, January being one of the slowest months, this check came at the right time.

When asked is they had any special plans for the money, the couple said they knew exactly where it would go.

“Bills,” Mark said. “Those never stop coming.”

“The kids would like us to get Chinese food,” added Ambrosia, whose children are ages 9, 10 and 12.

The Loudy’s tax preparer, Bev Raftery, said she is glad it went to them.

“I feel blessed to help them, especially since they’re with construction work,” said Raftery, who is familiar with the winter-time financial struggle through her marriage to a construction worker. “To see an extra check come in in January would have been great. We’re kind of in the same boat. When I saw it was going to a family with a construction worker, I was just tickled.”

“It’s pretty awesome,” said office manager Corey Luginbuhl. “For us to have been able to help three different people has been great. It’s almost surreal. Our Norwalk office has been here for over 40 years and it’s nice to give back, especially to our longer time customers.”

Luginbuhl said he and his staff weren’t expecting such an incredible response.

“Not at all he said,” he said. “We were hoping to get one when we heard about it. It’s been so nice to show some appreciation and feels good to be able to help others out.”

Luginbuhl said he hopes to continue to have winners as the contest progresses for the next two weeks.
