Local man wins $1,000 for filing taxes early

The early bird gets the worm.

That was certainly true of Norwalk’s Steve Fisher after he caught his own money worm for filing his taxes early.

Nationwide, H&R Block is encouraging its customers to file early by offering 1,000 people $1,000 every day through Feb. 19, with the last eligible day to file being Feb. 15, for a total off $38 million given away.

Fisher filed his taxes in the first two weeks of January with Norwalk’s H&R Block tax preparer Dayle Flesher and received the email announcing his win shortly thereafter. He said he didn’t believe it at first.

“I was looking at my John Force Racing emails when I saw I had one from H&R Block,” Fisher said.

“I thought it must be saying how my taxes went. Then I saw it said ’You’re a winner.’ Well you can only believe about a tenth of what you read online so I called the winner line and said they said ’No, you’re definitely a winner. It’s true.’ I was excited.”

The tax office was just as thrilled about the news.

“When we found out we were excited,” said office manager Corey Luginbuhl. “It was so exciting that it was someone from our store that was chosen, especially someone (who) has been a customer for so long. We were here trying to plan everything and wanted it to be great.”

Fisher said he has been a customer at H&R Block for “20 some years,” he’s had “good memories” and plans to continue to be a client.

He also already had plans for the big check.

“The very first thing will be to put 10-percent to the tithe,” Fisher said. “Then I’ll pay off some bills and maybe go to a movie. And I plan to treat my three daughters to dinner.”
