The nationally-celebrated event takes place on the first Saturday in May. Those who walk into participating stores can receive a free comic book.
The annual event returns Saturday at The POP! Shop in Sandusky and Rupp’s Comics in Fremont.
Some of the comic books offered Saturday will have easily recognized characters and worlds, including the Avengers, “Star Wars,” Spider-Man, “Stranger Things” and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This year POP! also will feature two artists — Steven Myers and Joe Corroney — for a meet-and-greet and demonstrations. Corroney, a celebrity artist, is known for his illustrations with “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” and artwork for books, games, trading cards, comic books, posters, prints and magazines.
The shop also will entertain guests with the popular collectible card game, “Magic the Gathering,” by teaching people how to play.
“We partnered up with Hasbro and will be giving out around 200 free decks,” manager David Baum said. “Each deck contains about 30 cards and it’s an awesome opportunity for community members.”
Rich Bloom, a freelance graphic designer and illustrator living in Ohio, will be at Rupp’s Comics on Saturday.
Bloom currently works closely with Source Point Press as its in-house designer, developing logos and designs for many titles. He has worked on many comic book series doing logo and book design and illustrations, such as “C.O.W.L.” and “Hadrian’s Wall,” both from Image Comics. Bloom also has developed logos for multiple series from Aftershock Comics and Caliber Comics.
Anyone in Ohio or in the U.S. can figure out how to participate by using the store locator at freecomicbookday.com/StoreLocator.
