Norwalk native publishes second young adult novel

Author and Norwalk native Greg Boose released his second young adult novel, “Achilles,” on Tuesday.

The novel is the first of a trilogy published by Diversion Books. Boose said the story, which takes places in 2221, was inspired by his love for the television show “Lost” and the infamous novel “Lord of the Flies,” by William Golding.

“I’m a big fan of stories surrounding isolation and truth, so I wanted to write something where people are trapped and you just don’t know who is on whose side,” Boose said.

The plot of “Achilles” definitely reflects those themes.

The young adult novel tells the story of orphaned teenager, Jonah Lincoln who is preparing for a voyage from Earth to a newly-colonized planet in another galaxy. Just as his ship is about to arrive, it crashes on the planet’s moon, Achilles. Jonah and his fellow teenage survivors are left struggling to survive in uncharted territory. The group must find a way to make it to their final destination before it’s too late.

“I like the idea of humans traveling through space to colonize a planet in the future. And then I thought, ‘What would happen if they got all that way but crashed on the planet's moon instead?’ I'd get to write about characters who were so close to reaching their goal only to have it taken away at the last second. And hey, here are a bunch of alien landscapes and creatures to play around with,” Boose said.

The author said the book is “jam packed with action and mystery.”

“Achillies” will be the second novel Boose has published under his own name. His first novel, “The Red Bishop,” also of the young adult genre, was published in 2014 and tells the story of a teenage witch slayer looking to find her lost brother. Boose also ghost-wrote two New York Times bestsellers in 2012 and 2013.

The author said “Achilles” took about six months to write.

“I’ve gone over and over it, editing it for over a year before it found a home with Diversion Books,” he added.

Boose is a 1997 St. Paul graduate. Born and raised in Norwalk, he now lives in Santa Monica, Calif. with his two young daughters.
