Think proportion, not Trump’s distortion

NOTE: The following letter to the editor was submitted by Richard Missler of Norwalk:

The battle cry of Trump’s stumps is “America First”, which the middle of America took to mean “embrace our own and protect our home.”

But instead, overseas divisions are playing out here as Trump oversees divisions.

Like cockroaches, racism had to scurry into the woodwork pre-Trump — but now this minority is no longer minor, it has gone from suppressed to expressed. Trump got elected by playing to fear, how he runs with it is now clear. He is not protecting our own.

The United States has indeed reached a diversity limit. Just as we are no longer the “world’s policeman,” we are also no longer its bus stop. The population in the U.S. has exploded from 200 to 300 million in a decade or so. We have a proportionate mix of black, brown, white, red and yellow. The Statue of Liberty is a beacon to the world, but no longer should the arms be outstretched. We need to pause. The Boston Marathon bombing and its implications are not an acceptable price for outmoded ideals.

So think proportion, not Trump’s distortion.
