Local man killed in crash on Ohio 18

CLARKSFIELD — A local man died this morning following a two-vehicle accident in Clarksfield Township.

Kevin Ray Leichner, 48, of Columbus, was driving a 2007 Freightliner Pumper Truck north on Fitchville River Road at 7:24 a.m. when he failed to stop at the stop sign for the Ohio 18 intersection, said troopers with the Norwalk post of the state Highway Patrol. The pumper truck then collided with the driver’s side of a westbound 2003 Ford Ranger being driven by Jesse L. Stewart, 41, of New London.

Stewart’s pickup truck went off the northwest corner of the intersection and came to rest in a yard. Stewart, who was wearing his seat belt, sustained fatal injuries, troopers said. Eastman Funeral Home responded to the scene and transported Stewart’s body to the funeral home.

Leichner’s truck went off the northwest corner of the intersection, struck a stop sign, overturned and came to rest on its side. Leichner, who was wearing his seat belt, sustained incapacitating injuries. He was transported by Citizens EMS to Fisher-Titus Medical Center, troopers said.

Stewart’s vehicle was towed from the scene by White’s Towing. The Freightliner was towed from the scene by Miller’s Towing.

Agencies assisting troopers at the scene included the Huron County Sherriff’s Office, Wakeman Fire Department and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT).

This was the third fatal accident in Huron County in the last five days. The other two happened on Ohio 162, one on Wednesday and the other on Friday.
