HARTLAND TOWNSHIP — The Norwalk post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a single-vehicle fatal crash that occurred Thursday.

The accident happened on Fitchville River Road south of Court Road in Hartland Township.

About 3:38 p.m., the driver of a 2002 Ford Ranger was northbound on Fitchville River Road when he failed to negotiate a slight, left curve, troopers said. The Ranger went off the right side of the road and hit a mailbox. Troopers said the driver then went back across Fitchville River Road and went off the left side, where the truck struck a ditch and overturned into several trees.

The driver, Joey Petty, 39, of Sheffield Lake, died as a result of the crash, troopers said. He was wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash.

Troopers also said alcohol or drug use don’t appear to be factors at this time.

The patrol was assisted by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, New London and Townsend Township volunteer fire departments, North Central EMS and White’s Automotive Services.
