Orval J. Tingler Jr., 63, of Oberlin, was driving a 2003 GMC east on U.S. 20 in Wakeman Township at 5:35 p.m. when his vehicle when left of center and collided with an eastbound tractor trailer, said troopers with the Norwalk post of the state Highway Patrol. After the collision, Tingler’s vehicle came to rest in both lanes, while the semi — a 2000 Freightliner being driven by Jacob Swearinger, 63, of Donahue, Iowa — stopped on the north side of the highway.
Tingler, who was wearing a seatbelt, sustained incapacitating injuries and was flown by a Metro LifeFlight helicopter to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland, troopers said.
Swearinger was not injured, troopers said.
White’s Towing removed the GMC, and Interstate Towing removed the semi.
Alcohol and/or drug use are not suspected as factors in the crash, which remains under investigation, troopers said.
Agencies assisting troopers at the scene included the Wakeman Fire Department, Citizen’s Ambulance and the Huron County Sheriff’s Office.
