GROTON TOWNSHIP — Seven people were injured in a crash Saturday that took out an electric pole in Groton Township.

Denise L. Doyle, 53, of Vermilion, was traveling northbound on Ohio 4, approaching the intersection of Ohio 99 at about 10:30 p.m., when she collided with a vehicle driven by Seth M. Smale, 40, of Perrysburg.

Smale had been stopped at the stop sign, but reportedly failed to notice Doyle and attempted to turn left at the intersection, according to Erie County Sheriff’s Office reports.

Doyle hit Smale’s vehicle, then went off the road to the left and hit an Ohio Edison utility pole, which came down, according to reports.

Doyle suffered incapacitating injuries and was taken by North Central EMS to a Toledo hospital.

Smale, along with three of his passengers — April Urban, 60, of Vermilion; Aaron Urban, 25, of Parma Heights; and Shannon Smale, 41, of Perrysburg, — all received non-incapacitating injuries and were treated at the scene by North Central.

Two children, Emmal Smale, 1, and Maddison Smale, 4, both of Perrysburg, received possible injuries.

The crash closed Ohio 99 between Ohio 4 and Portland Road for about 2 1/2 hours.

Seth Smale was charged with failure to yield at a stop sign.

Alcohol and drugs aren’t suspected to have played a part in the accident and neither driver was distracted while driving, according to the report.
