The Ohio State Highway Patrol is currently investigating a single-vehicle-pedestrian injury crash which occurred early Monday morning in Akron.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol Akron post responded to report of a wrong-way driver southbound in the northbound lane of Interstate 77 at about 4:50 a.m. When troopers attempted to initiate a traffic stop with the 2013 silver Kia Optima driven by Jovon Dawson, 23, of University Heights, Dawson fled the scene. A pursuit ensued and a short time later, “stop sticks” were deployed by the Stow Police Department, which ended the pursuit on Ohio 8.
As soon as the vehicle came to a stop though, Dawson again fled the scene, this time on foot, running east into the woods.
While attempting to cross Ohio 8 on foot, he ran into the side of a 2008 Honda Odyssey driven by John Arnette, 32, of Uniontown, which was traveling southbound. Arnette was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash.
Dawson received non-life threatening injuries and was transported to Akron City Hospital. Drug use is believed to be factor, however, the incident remains under investigation by the Patrol’s Akron Post.
The patrol and Stow police and fire departments were assisted by the Cuyahoga Falls, Hudson and Boston Heights police departments and the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.
