An 8-year-old Akron boy is in critical condition at Akron Children’s Hospital after being shot in the abdomen by his 9-year-old cousin with a gun he found in a cupboard.

Akron police responded to the shooting at 1 a.m. Sunday at a residence in the 1200 block of Marcy Street in the city’s South Akron neighborhood.

Detectives said the two boys were playing video games when the 9-year-old when into the kitchen to get some snacks.

He found a handgun and then pointed it at the younger boy and fired a shot, hitting him in the abdomen, police said.

A 14-year-old boy who was upstairs at the time came downstairs and ran outside to ask someone to call for help.

The shooting remains under investigation and no charges have been filed.
