About 1:55 p.m., Norwalk police and firefighters were called to 7 Adams St. after being notified about a window unit air-conductioner on fire on the second floor.
Upon arrival, they found one of the occupants on the front porch, yelling at the first-responders, police said. They also saw a man — later identified as John D. Marsillett — standing on the roof.
A ladder was raised to rescue Marsillett, but he refused and threw the ladder aside. That began a standoff that lasted several hours.
Marsillett, 33, of Norwalk, was wanted for warrants from the Huron County Sheriff's Office. He refused to come off the roof and began threatening to kill officers and firefighters if they came near him, according to the police report.
Meanwhile, firefighters stretched a pre-connected hose line to the second floor and extinguished the fire, according to the fire report.
Some time after 8 p.m., Marsillett either jumped or fell off the roof and was taken into custody, police said.
Marsillett was transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center for treatment and later incarcerated in the Huron County Jail. He is charged with aggravated arson and disrupting public services.
Megan Derby, 32, of Norwalk, was arrested on a charge of tampering with evidence. She also is incarcerated in the Huron County Jail.
The fire is still under investigation. Property losses were reported to be at least $13,500, firefighters said.
Firefighters returned to the station at 9 p.m.
The Huron County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident as well.
The State Fire Marshall's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation also are involved in the investigation.
