Cpl. C.J. Blaha dies in France
Mrs. Lyda Phillips Blaha of Collins received a telegram from Adjutant General Uho tis morning stating that her husband, Charles J. Blaha, died July 21st of wounds received in action in France. This is the first notification Mrs. Blaha has had of her husband’s fatal injuries
Cpl. Blaha is the half brother of Edward Kirsha, who was killed in action early in the spring. He had been in the army for about two years and went overseas with an anti-tank division in March. Besides his wife, he leaves a baby daguther, Rosemary, and his parents, who live in Fitchville.
Capt. Tom Battles gets Bronze Star for Munda action
WITH THE 37th INFANTRY DIVISION SOMEWHERE IN THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA — Captain Thomas E. Battles, husband of Mrs. Mary O. Battles of 66 Norwood Ave., Norwalk, has been awarded the Bronze Star medal for combat efficiency and courage under fire during the capture of Munda Airfield on New Georgia Island in July 1943.
Then a First Lieutenant, Battles was assigned the important task of Supply Officer for an Infantry Battalion advancing toward the stubbornly defended air strip. His was the responsibility of keeping that battalion supplied with food, water and ammunition.
Now in his third year of overseas service, he has been station in New Zealand, the Fiji Islands and Guadalcanal. He participated in the Bougainville Campaign, where he received his promotion to captain.
Shower for Miss Myers
Miss Pauline Myers was again honored with a miscellaneous shower given by Mrs. Ken McDaniel at her home in Vermilion on Sunday, August 6th. The afternoon was spent playing Whirling Words and Horse Racing. Prizes for high score were presented to Miss Jean Eggleston and Mrs. Robert Riggelman. Delicious supper was served buffet style. Miss Myers received many beautiful gifts form the guests: Mrs. Margarette Myers, Mrs. Hobert Riggelman, Mrs. Elmer Dials, Miss Florence Stein, Mrs. Donald Albright, Miss Marion Miller, Miss Jean Eggleston, Miss Mackie Adelman, Miss Gertrude McManus and from the hostess, Mrs. McDaniel.
