NL boy recovering from fireworks burns

NEW LONDON -— Doctors at Fisher-Titus Memorial Hospital will not know for three or four days whether Randy Hamilton, 14, will need skin grafts for burns he received from exploding firecracker powder.

Randy suffered first, second and third degree burns Sept. 5, while playing in a treehouse. He is the son of Newberry (Everett) Hamilton of New London.

Edward Hamilton, thew boy’s uncle, said Randy collected the powder from fireworks that failed to ignite at the Labor Day celebration at Recreation Park.

Hamilton said Randy put the powder in the pocket of a carpenter’s apron and with a cousin, Tony Hamilton, 11, and Tracy Hall, 13, went to a treehouse they had built on New London Avenue.

When Randy struck a match to ignite something else, the powder in his pocket exploded.
