NEW LONDON — The village of New London received exciting business expansion news at Monday night’s council meeting.

Dr. Brent Burkey, president of Fisher-Titus Medical Center, told council a new building would be constructed to replace the current Fisher-Titus Family Medicine facility on West Main Street.

The new building will comprise of a 3,500- square-foot building of medical office suites to compliment the same services provided now. The new building will allow room for expansion in the future.

The new building will feature two medical office suites, with each suite having a private entrance with reception areas. The medical building will have eight patient exam rooms, two nurse stations and work areas, and office space for physicians and other providers. Fisher-Titus Family Medicine will occupy one suite, with the second reserved for future health-related services for the community, such as additional providers or specialty clinics.

Burkey said construction will begin as soon as possible and should be completed by the end of the year. The general contractors/architects on the project, Janotta & Herner, plan to build the facility on the same location as the current building. The current building will be partially demolished to make room for parking, however, it will remain open to continue providing services.

Once the new facility is constructed and open, the current building will be removed and the parking lot expanded.

Councilwoman Jennifer Ball said this will allow for as few interruptions to the services offered to the community.

Mayor John Martin said it’s “very exciting” for the community to receive an updated medical center, adding to the village’s University Hospital urgent care center, which recently opened. He said he hopes New London one day will have its own pharmacy as well.

“We are pleased that there will be minimal disruption for our patients during the construction,” said Dr. Jeffrey Harwood of the New London Fisher-Titus Family Medicine.

“Our entire staff is excited to be able to serve our patients with this modern, family-friendly facility. We look forward of continuing our tradition of providing care to the generations of families we have known for decades, as well as being involved in and supporting community activities.”

Ball added: “I think it’s great for the village. We have a lot of people in the community who don’t have the means to travel outside of town. And that Fisher-Titus medical office with Dr. Harwood has been there a long time. It’s very outdated. We’re very excited that Fisher-Titus is doing this.”

Ball said the project will do more than offer more space and a more modern building. She said the hospital is looking at what the local residents there “really need” and what medical services they travel out of town to receive.

“They’re looking at what the residents really need and are providing that,” she said. “I think it’ll be a great addition.”
