Finances and city safety in a good spot

WILLARD — The Blossom City is in a good place both financially and in terms of safety, according to city manager Jim Ludban’s recent report.

City council heard how June revenue totaled $1.2 million — 94 percent of the budgeted amount. Willard’s expenses too were in a good place, Ludban said. Expenses equaled about 88 percent of the budgeted $1.34 million.

“The year-to-date positive cash flow is the encouraging result of the entire staff’s efforts,” Ludban said in his report to council.

Ludban had more good news and praise to share regarding the city’s emergency first responders. The city manager said he was especially pleased with the Willard Police Department’s training during June. He said the agency recently has taken a more-focused approach to increasing its training. So far this year, officers have completed more than 500 hours of training. 

“There was a high level of activity with the department,” Ludban said. “The police training is really an impressive part. They completed a significant amount of training so far this year. They’re really fully-involved (with the city) and just doing a fine job.” 

The hard work in training seems to be paying off, as officers reported a productive month. Ludban said the department used two search warrants, made 14 warrant arrests and made 39 senior watch-checks in June.

Willard Fire and EMS also reported a solid month, with 131 calls for service answered. Ludban told council about 104 of those were EMS calls. 

“This was a pretty standard month for them, but I’m very pleased with their work,” he said.
