Norwalk, St. Paul headed to state playoffs

COLUMBUS — The Ohio High School Athletic Association released the sixth official weekly football computer ratings on Tuesday.

The ratings are released every Tuesday beginning in the fifth week of the season, leading up to the final report on Sunday, when 224 schools (top 8 in each region) will officially qualify for the playoffs. The top four teams in each region host a first-round game.

As expected, both Norwalk and St. Paul are headed to the playoffs — while a trio of Firelands Conference teams have longshot odds to play another game next weekend.

In Division III Region 10, the state-ranked Truckers (7-2) moved up one spot from third to second — despite losing 32-31 in overtime last week vs. Clyde. The Fliers (7-2) are first in the region with 22.9889 points, followed by Norwalk (18.2475), Bay Village (7-2, 17.8278) and Tiffin Columbian (7-2, 17.833).

The Truckers visit the Tornadoes on Friday in a matchup of two teams in the top four. Norwalk is assured of hosting a first-round game at 7 p.m. next Friday at Whitney Field regardless of this week’s outcome in Tiffin. With a win, it will finish second in the region, and with a loss likely finish third.

Norwalk could be hosting any of the four teams in that game: Bowling Green (5-4), Lexington (5-4), Sandusky (5-4) or Rocky River (6-3).

In Div. VII Region 26, St. Paul (8-1) has a stranglehold on the No. 6 spot in the region and cannot fall out with a loss at Monroeville (6-3) on Friday. They will play a road game at 7 p.m. next Saturday, but where remains in question.

The most likely destinations for the Flyers should they remain sixth is Tiffin Calvert (8-1) or McComb (8-1). The biggest threat or wild card to that will be if No. 7 seed Patrick Henry (6-3) were to upset Liberty Center (9-0) this Friday.

Also in the region, South Central (6-3) saw its playoff hopes take a big hit with last week’s 21-12 loss at Crestview (4-5). The Trojans are likely to finish outside the top eight, regardless if they win Friday over New London (0-9).

Among the upsets needed for South Central includes a Willard (5-4) win over Gibsonburg (8-1), Crestline (4-5) over Troy Christian (7-2), Western Reserve (2-7) over Mapleton (6-3) — along with Monroeville (6-3) over St. Paul (8-1) and Plymouth (4-5) over Crestview (4-5).

According to fantastic50.net, the Trojans are mathematically eliminated win or lose.

Meanwhile, the Eagles need a win over St. Paul and dozens of scenarios to move up from 12th to eighth. Fantastic50.net gives Monroeville a 1 percent chance with a win on Friday.

Meanwhile, in Region 25, Plymouth’s hopes are still alive. The Big Red are 12th in the region with 4.3111 points — but also could be in a scenario to play in Week 11 for the second time ever.

Fantastic50.net puts Plymouth’s chances at 55 percent with a win.

Among the matchups the Big Red needs to play out includes Mapleton over Western, Ashtabula St John (6-3) over Southington Chalker (6-3), Cardington-Lincoln (1-8) over Mount Gilead (0-9), Cleveland Villa Angela-St Joseph (3-6) over Warren John F Kennedy (4-5) and Brookfield (2-7) over Warren Champion (2-7).

Also of note, thanks to an upset win last week over previously unbeaten Avon Lake (8-1), Olmsted Falls (7-2) is likely headed back to the playoffs for a third straight year in Div. II with a win at North Olmsted (5-4). The Bulldogs are coached by 1999 Norwalk graduate Tom DeLuca.

The top 12 schools in each region are listed below in regions there is an area team involved — with record and average points.
