Eagles, Ruffing stay hot in win over Western

MONROEVILLE — The host Eagles scored 21 points in the third quarter to break open a close game Friday and defeat Western Reserve in Firelands Conference action at Marsh Field.

Friday’s 46-23 win over the Roughriders improved Monroeville to 5-3 overall and 3-2 in the FC, also keeping its playoff hopes alive with two weeks remaining.

Monroeville held a 12-10 lead at halftime before adding three touchdowns in the third to pull ahead 33-10 after three quarters.

The Eagles got on the board first as Adam Rogers scored off a 39-yard run early in the first quarter.

Western’s (2-6, 2-3) Dalton Webb responded with a 34-yard field goal to cut Monroeville’s lead to 6-3 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the teams traded touchdowns, as Dominic Ruffing scored from six yards out to put Monroeville up 12-3, before Cody Benesh scored his first of three touchdowns for the Roughriders to make it 12-10 at the half.

Chayce Schaub scored a pair of touchdowns for the Eagles to open the third quarter, one on the ground, from 12 yards out and one through the air, as he found Isaiah Scheid for a 61-yard TD pass.

Ruffing added Monroeville’s third touchdown of the third quarter, running in from one yard out to make it 33-10.

Bennesh and Ruffing each added a pair of TD runs for their respective teams in the fourth quarter, as Benesh had TD runs of one and 58 yards, while Ruffing added a two-yard score and a 21-yard TD run.

Schaub was 6-of-8 passing or 114 yards and one TD for the Eagles, while Ruffing added 23 carries for 209 yards and four TDs.

Benesh led the Roughriders with 33 carries for 188 yards and three TDs.

Monroeville finished with 477 yards of total offense, including 43 rushes for 363 yards (8.4 average) on the ground. The Roughriders totaled 287 yards, which included 46 attempts for 210 yards rushing.

Monroeville visits Plymouth (4-4, 2-3) next Friday, while things get no easier for Western as it hosts St. Paul (7-1, 5-0).
