COLLINS — A two-story West Collins Road house had significant damage after a fire Thursday morning.

Nobody was home when the Townsend Township Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched just before 9:30 a.m. The four-person crew received mutual assistance from 14 Norwalk firefighters.

“We got the call about 9:26 (a.m.),” said Al McGinn, Townsend Township fire chief. “We called the Norwalk Fire Department for mutual aid.

“Everybody was gone (from the house). The homeowner had left by about 7 o’clock in the morning,” he continued.

The Townsend Township crew arrived within about 10 minutes of being called to the scene. The blaze was under control in about 90 minutes.

“It pretty much started in the attic,” McGinn said. “We contacted the state fire marshal’s office. They are going to classify it as an electrical fire.”

The Norwalk crew was called to West Collins Road about 9:40 a.m.

“We still had fire in the attic. We were working on opening up the walls,” said Lt. Curt Stang, who was on the third Norwalk truck at the scene.

Stang said there was extensive damage to the house.

“It wasn’t so much from the fire, but getting to the fire,” he added.

The downstairs had significant smoke and water damage.

“The entire upstairs is totaled,” McGinn said.

The family — a mother and two daughters — has been displaced from the home.

“I think the family is going to stay with relatives up the road. We contacted the Red Cross and they talked to them,” McGinn said.

The Huron County Sheriff’s Office handled traffic control and assisted firefighters with hose duty.

McGinn was the last firefighter to leave the scene about 2 p.m.

“Everything went great. We got the fire knocked out pretty quickly. We greatly appreciate the assistance of the Norwalk Fire Department, Chief (John) Soisson and his men,” he said.

Soisson left the scene about 1:45 p.m.

“When I arrived, we had smoke pushing out of the attic. We recognized it as an attic fire,” he said.
